“Preparing for Real-Life Situations: My Experience with “Sims” Lab Simulation on Stroke and Head Injury”

Lab Simulation “Sims” Experience
This is my experience, stroke and head Injury
Introduction
– Just discuss the importance of the simulation, preparing the student in real life. Great actors, make it really authentic. – Im the observer for both head injury/stroke sims.
– I prepare myself by pre reading provided to us, reviewing assessment and focus based on the prep sheet that includes the scenario. – watching video on how to assess with this type of event.
– Learning new things, that stroke is one of the risk factors of COVID
-Always remember the importance of the basic skills suchs: hand hygiene, NOD, identify the pt. even though it is just sims. I tend to focus on the scenario since we have the information the day before.
-one reference
Body
– Importance of baseline data
– anticipate doctors order, treatment, possible complications, and contraindication
– Importance of intepreting lab values, – Time management: two students should communicate and devide their work: taking V/S, then other is inserting IV, – Be Calm and confident no need to rush; make things worst
What was the experience like for you? Did you have pre conceived ideas of the experience and did those
notions change for you when the simulation was done?
– As a observer especially for stroke scenario, I was expecting the pt was already in the bed and we come in
and do some assessments and follow doctors order, but when it comes to sims the participant have to received report from the nurse and the pt was on the wheelchair, if I were the participant I will also blank out and dont know what to do
if we should transfer the patient with Left sideweakness. As for now we basically look at the patient mode of transer in my
my clinical. It kinda throw me with that scenarion. I just have to be flexible and adaptable in type of scenario
and no always pertaining to doctors order
What did you learn from the experience? How will this experience influence your nursing practice?
What would you do differently next time?
– this sims also woke me up that as a nurse I’ll be the one that start seeing the pt from the beginning rather than
recovering and maintaing the pt in ward. – Familiarizing with different protocols and know where to look, dont need to memorize it.
– Be calm, and confident, can pause a bit and get yourself together
– Get more information from the nurse, even small information could help with the patient
– Importance of discharge teaching
Conclusion
-Sims help me to prepare with this specific type of event in the future.
– No need to know/memorize every single protocol, know where to look is good enough
– as a observer that week helps me to prepare better for next week for another scenaribcio, I know what to expect
