Group 1: Read the scenario and respond to the prompts. Cindy Richards was recently hired as a nurse on a busy medical surgical unit at Ocean View Hospital. This is a 40 bed unit and has a large staff composed of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. As a new employee Cindy is trying to figure out how to succeed as a new nurse on this very busy unit. The floor is coordinated by a Director, Manager, and Assistant Manager.
Marty Bleeker is the director of the unit. She has worked for the hospital for 10 years and prides herself on the success of the unit. Marty openly talks about exceeding expectations for NPSG established by the hospital administration team. She commends the staff for meeting these goals regularly. Marty also publicly scolds those who may have contributed to errors, missed opportunities, or missing benchmarks for the unit. When on the unit, Marty is frequently changing the plan the charge nurse has come up with. She also attempts to control the staff members by demanding things be done a certain way. As a new nurse on the unit, Cindy has made several minor errors in the process of learning and feels very uncertain about her competence. She is intimidated by Marty believing that this manager is continually watching and evaluating her. Several times Marty has publicly criticized Cindy on her mistakes and shortcomings. Cindy is trying very hard to not ask questions but also take care of her patients safely.
