The Importance of Clinical Resources in Patient Care: A Focus on UpToDate and AAFP
Hermenegildo Clinical resources, also called clinical practice guidelines, are based on the latest “professional standards” (Keystone First VIP Choice, 2022) and help clinicians care for patients. As a family nurse practitioner student in a clinical rotation, I have seen UpToDate and AAFP used in the clinic to help with diagnoses, assessments, and treatment plans. In addition, clinicians who use these tools have access to clinical guidance and responses based on evidence (Wolters Kluwer, 2022). UpToDate brings together clinical data and best practices to allow clinicians to care for patients and conduct research (Wolters Kluwer A, 2022). The editorial team for UpToDate does a lot of research on clinical topics (Wolters Kluwer A, 2022). It looks at the quality of the studies, the order of the evidence, and how relevant the therapy is (Wolters Kluwer A, 2022). The best evidence comes from meta-analyses and randomized trials (Wolters Kluwer B, 2022). Followed by expert judgments or a consensus are observational studies and random clinical observations (Wolters Kluwer B, 2022). When all relevant data are included in a systematic review, inferences become more critical (Wolters Kluwer B, 2022). UpToDate updates its clinical information to cover essential topics in places with few resources and improve healthcare workers’ clinical knowledge globally (Wolters Kluwer B, 2022). Even with all of this information, experts can easily find current topics to diagnose, evaluate, or plan treatment. `The AAFP, or the American Academy of Family Physicians, nationally represents family doctors (AAFP, 2018). The AAFP provides “2018 and beyond” (AAFP, 2018) practice guidelines, immunization information, and preventative services guidance. The AAFP provides advice in all 50 states and other countries (AAFP, 2018). The AAFP keeps its members up-to-date on immunization and health guidelines (AAFP News Staff, 2018). AAFP aims to improve doctors’ and patients’ health, and it is based on many years of lobbying, leading, and doing (AAFP, 2018). The AAFP cares for people of any age, gender, or condition (AAFP, 2018) through medical or clinical research. This is done by planning, carrying out, and sharing primary care research that makes patients, families, and communities healthier (AAFP, 2018).
