Swamped with your writing assignments? Take the weight off your shoulder!
I will add pictures of the rubric and explanation.
In Paper 1, you were asked to explain a single passage from the Apology. In Paper 2, you
analyzed a longer argument in Descartes’s Meditations and came up with an objection. In Paper
3, you will compare two philosophers’ positions and take a position on them. Here is the topic:
Would the Socrates of the Crito approve or disapprove of those who engage in civil
disobedience, as Martin Luther King, Jr. defines it? Is Socrates’s judgment correct, or
not? If you like, you can use as a model of civil disobedience Rosa Parks’s refusal to give
up her seat on the bus. Feel free to use other examples, however. Give reasons for your
answer by referring to and explaining specific passages from both the Crito and any of
the essays by King.
For this paper, I am requiring you to use textual evidence (quotations and/or paraphrases) to
support your analysis. Be sure to cite all textual evidence properly. Since we’re all using the
same texts, all you need to do is put quotations around anything that’s directly copied and
include the page number in parentheses after the quotation. If you’re paraphrasing, you should
also include a page number. You do not need to include a works cited list.
Although it is not required – this is not a research paper – you may use outside sources to find
examples of civil disobedience. However, do not use the internet or any other outside sources on
the work of Socrates and King. Everything you need to understand their positions should be in
your class notes and the primary texts that we are studying in the course. Consulting external
sources on Socrates and King will be considered an act of academic dishonesty. I want to know
what you understand.
Your paper should be 700-1000 words long, double spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides,
and normal-sized (12-point) font.
