Essay Prompt: The British colonists were rallied to war with the words, “All men are created equal.” Yet as a nation we still struggle to fully live up to this fundamental ideal. Drawing on what you have learned about the U.S. system of government, and what you know about American history, answer the following question: Which of the following groups of political actors do you think has done the most to advance the cause of civil rights in America: Congress, Presidents, the federal courts, or the American voting public?Which of these has done the most to impede or slow progress on civil rights?
