When carrying handbags to show off if they have lovely handbags and to carry things they need to do genders such as flowery perfumes and girly-smelling lotions, boys bully other kids because they don’t like sports or fit in with other boys.

COLLAPSE SUBDISCUSSION Marisa Escamilla Hi Class, What does “doing gender” mean? “doing gender” means it “is not simply what a person is, it is something that a person does, in interaction with others” (Schoepflin, T. 2011, August 10). It is a production, and it is socially constructed. We do it daily, and most try to follow the social cues for what “doing gender” is for them. And we do it to fit in with our peers or societal norms. We learn from a young age some of the doing gender acts we are supposed to do, and it is ever-changing as society changes. Some examples of doing gender are men carrying wallets and women having purses. When carrying handbags to show off if they have lovely handbags and to carry things they need to do genders such as flowery perfumes and girly-smelling lotions, boys bully other kids because they don’t like sports or fit in with other boys. We learn to appropriately our gender at a young age by what we know, such as being lady-like or boys will be boys, meaning girls are supposed to be quiet, calm, and nurturing while boys are wild and break things. We learn from the media that girls wear makeup or buy skin products to look younger, and even in school, with sports such as cheerleading for girls and football for boys. Of course, you will get a mix, but that is not the norm of doing gender for those roles they are supposed to play. This week I have done gender by dressing girls, wearing makeup, and using girly lotion and perfumes before I head out for my day. Schoepflin, T. (2011, August 10).
