Potential Resources:
Class Notes/Lectures/ Films watched in class
Race in North America: Origin an Evolution of a Worldview by Audrey Smedley and Brian Smedley
Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi
White Fragility: Why it’s So Hard for White People to Talk about Racism by Robin Diangelo.
Racism without Racist: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in the United States by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva
Part I (Background) Answer the following questions:
What is the name of your organization/person?
What is your organization’s/person’s mission statement?
What are some of the goals of your organization/person?
Who are some the leaders of your selected organization? (You do not have to answer this if you are researching a person)
What has your organization/person accomplished within their community?
Part II (Analysis) Answer the following questions:
Why did you select this organization/person as a symbol of anti-racism?
Drawing from the readings from class (Smedley, Kendi, Diangelo, and Silva), how does your organization/person challenge racism. For example, if I found an organization that helps educate school children on racial bias than I could use materials from Kendi and Diangelo as both authors discuss the ways in which racial bias is taught at an early age. Make sure to use specific examples from the text and cite (ex. Kendi, 125). Students should use at least two sources from class and they should demonstrate knowledge and mastery of class materials. For example, if a student only uses one quote from one book, that student would lose a significant amount of points for this section.
Part III (Reflect) Answer the following questions:
What are the strengths and weaknesses of your organization/person?
In what ways could your organization/person improve their anti-racist agenda?
