The “90 Second Elevator Speech” is to explain the medication METROPOLOL down to the briefest explanation possible. The student must be prepared and present with confidence. Answer the following questions: What drug are you about to explain? What are the brand and generic names? What is the medication’s class (ie. Cephalosporin)? What is the mechanism of action for your drug? What is the desired effect of your drug? What are the known side effects that would be considered normal or anticipated? (These are side effects that would not cause the patient to stop the drug therapy.) What are the known adverse effects that are known, not always present and would cause a patient to discontinue a medication? What indications would make a bedside nurse hold a medication, or not give a medication?
