Suppose the interprofessional team is working on a study looking at the relationship between the perception of pain intensity and quality of life in advanced cancer patients. In that case, it will use cross-sectional research and quasi-experimental research to support the idea. However, both research may have strengths and weaknesses to support their argument. “Cross-sectional studies can explore relationships and correlations, differences and comparisons, or both” (LoBiondo-Wood& Haber, 2017). So, in this case, the cross-sectional design will help study the relationship between pain intensity and quality of life in advanced cancer patients because this study explores the relationships. Also, the quasi-experimental study may serve in this case because the quasi-experimental research does not use randomness. Therefore, quasi-experimental research will focus on people with cancer and how severe pain affects their quality of life.
Moreover, nonexperimental designs can also study the relationship. In addition, both of these studies are less expensive than the other studies. Using cross-sectional, a researcher can collect large amounts of data at one point, making the results more readily available. Honestly, when I read the tenth chapter in the textbook on cross-sectional research and the information I had from the previous chapter on quasi-experimental design, I did not see many differences between these two researches. There were more similarities than differences, according to (Cherry, 2022). Cross-sectional could be more observational in nature and is known as descriptive research, not causal or relational.
On the other hand, “the quasi-experiment is a type of research design that attempts to establish a cause-and-effect relationship” (Thomas, 2022). It is essential to have a team composed of interprofessional members to review the study. It may help develop the experience and identify weaknesses that the researcher needs to reconsider. Another useful point of interprofessional members in a study is sharing skills and knowledge to improve research quality.

As a part of the inter professional team in a hospital my goal to determine how I can resolve each groups differences is by having them explain thoroughly what both experiments are and what they pertain. In a cross-sectional design, it allows researchers to conduct observable research that analyzes data of variables that were collected at one point in time across a sample population; whereas a quasi-experimental design study gives researchers the ability to evaluate interventions but that do not use randomization. This will allow to demonstrate causality between an intervention and an outcome amongst what is being studied.
By conducting studies for looking into the relationship of pain severity and quality of life in advanced cancer patients, each group would represent as to why that the study that had chosen is fit study to conduct research on. The group that had chosen to conduct the study with cross-sectional design study can determine the research by asking the following questions emphasized by Gerri Loboiondo-Wood and Judith Haber, (2022): What is the level of knowledge about cancer risk factors? What is the level of knowledge about early diagnosis? What are the awareness, knowledge, information sources, and practices regarding infection? What are the relationships between the sociodemographic and professional characteristics?” (Loboiondo-Wood and Haber, 2022). Furthermore, in a cross-sectional study, researchers are able to collect data at one point in time on only one occasion with the same subject(s). In this design study, each step of this study was consistent with aiming the exploration. With that being said, the variable were related to the outcomes. Regards to quasi-experiemental design, conducting research establishes a cause and effect which will make the research flow better knowing the these two concepts including an independent and dependent variable.
How I would support each group with their argument and to resolve their differences is by making sure that both sides develop proper clinical practice guidelines that will still intertwine per design study. With the use of guidelines, guidelines can assist in combining practice and research; which works collaboratively with both researchers using cross-sectional design study and quasi-experimental design study. I believe it is important to have a team made of inter professional members reviewing and being a part of this study is because it is important to receive input from different parties out of your practice. Other interprofessionals are always involved in patient care so it is just as important for them to be including in research design studies.
