Topic: In this essay, you will create and investigate one interesting question related to your future career. Avoid questions that seem to have simple answers. Instead, devise a question that needs some more digging, and about which you have your own opinions.
For tips for what to focus on and how to organize your ideas, please see the handout “How to Be Successful on Essay 2.”
The goal of this essay is not to present and defend an argument (that comes in Module 3!). Rather, this essay will be spent exploring and engaging with others’ ideas to help prepare for your own argument over time. Try to pick a central question that interests you.
Example 1:
Future Career: Education
Question: How do grades affect student learning and engagement?
[Avoid questions like: Do grades affect student learning and engagement? This leads to an easy, “yes/no” answer.]
Example 2:
Future Career: Healthcare
Question: What might the future of medicine look like in 20 years?
[Try to avoid overdone, complex topics that can’t be addressed well in a short period of time: abortion, stem cells, euthanasia, drugs, etc.]
