Exam is an essay on a single question (below) to be done on your own and returned in one week using only sources
assigned in class. The idea is not to do research but instead to draw on your understanding of concepts and readings
in the class. One recurring theme we’ve seen in the first half of the semester is that of resistance: how African people have
resisted enslavement, terror, and subjugation during contact with the west. In this essay, you will describe how
African people have shown resistance during the following historical periods:
• On the African continent before arrival in the US
• During the period of enslavement in the US
• During Reconstruction following enslavement before the 1920s. You should use specific examples each historical period from texts assigned in the class to make your argument.
You can use anything assigned for the course: the main course textbook, supplementary PDFs, videos, etc. Outside
sources are neither encouraged nor allowed Focus on specific examples from the texts to make your argument. Summarize the examples and explain (in at
least a paragraph for each one) how these examples demonstrate resistance to different threats facing Black people
during each historical period.
You should focus on specific events and use them to represent larger trends in US history rather than trying to
re-tell the story word-for-word. Use the strategy of a brief summary of each event followed by your analysis of how
this event connects to your thesis.
To repeat and emphasize: focus on your own analysis of events rather than summary. Do not simply cut-and-
paste summaries of events.
Your first paragraph should be a basic intro of the events you’ll focus on and historical periods you’ll cover (the
latter is already given to you). Subsequent paragraphs should focus on the examples you chose from the sources
you’ve selected and tell the story of how they connect to your thesis on resistance.
You can simply introduce the text you’re drawing information from as part of your essay and then refer to specific
page numbers that you quote from/cite.
Format:
• Essays should be fully developed with full paragraphs, a coherent introduction, and conclusion
• Approximately 3-4 pages (1000-1200 words)
• Double spaced with 12 point Times font
