Correctional System – State of the Union:
During the course, of this class, each student will be assigned a state. You are the Honorary Governor of that state and are tasked with reducing the cost of operating the state’s prison system.
Expectations:
Research the (actual) state operations cost for their prison system and understand the complexities involved (how much is spent, what is the budget, how many prisons exist, etc.)
Compare to other states that may have a similar population count but has lower incarceration rates; what are they doing differently – can you adopt some of their front-end tactics?
Determine 3-5 ways that you will cut the operating cost of corrections in your state (public safety is essential, so releasing all inmates is not an option). Evaluate current programs and assess the path that the business of corrections is taking.
