The criminal justice has several career dockets that one may be interested in as they mainly pertain to providing custody and control in jails. However, I am more intrigued by the correction career as I desire to work in a correction facilities where I have an opportunity to help detainees in turning their lives around. The success of my chosen profession is linked to critical thinking traits, abilities, and attitudes such as problem-solving skills, self-discipline, sound judgment, and interpersonal skills. To ascertain the necessary thinking skills required in the correction career, I carried out a critical thinking test that has helped me gauge my success rate. The test also highlights areas I need to improve, necessary for practicing my career in a real-world scenario.

A critical thinking trait necessary to flourish in the correctional career is the ability to solve problems efficiently. After a critical thinking test, I attained 90%. I got eight correct answers and two wrong answers out of the ten questions. The test was timed for five minutes, but I managed to finish before the deadline. My attitudes towards the career are also explicit due to my mental and emotional stability. As an essential requirement in a correctional career, my critical thinking traits will enhance my success rate as I will have the ability to solve problems and resolve conflicts. I will use my critical thinking traits in utilizing observational and attitude skills to visualize mentally and critically before instituting a decision. For example, I will ensure that inmates effectively follow the rules and regulations to maintain law and order in the correctional facility. In summary, I feel fit for the correction career as I am efficient in solving problems, self-disciplined in working within a specified time and have sound judgment abilities in making decisions.

Correctional officers must possess critical thinking abilities and attitudes to thrive in their careers. Through the critical thinking test, I would rate my ability to do the job as successful as I have the interest and skills to serve. For example, the test required quick understanding and response to the scenario, which I effectively achieved. The test has helped sharpen my problem-solving and decision-making abilities within a short time, which I intend to reciprocate in my criminal justice job. For instance, in the rise of havoc in the correctional facility, I will follow the procedure stipulated in the correctional codes to rest the situation. However, I will work to thrive in the problem-solving skills as identified in the critical thinking test. In doing so, I will ensure my critical thinking skills are optimal for my success in the criminal justice field. Also, I intend to improve my attitude when dealing with inmates and mainly to remain positive in achieving my desire to help them correct their behaviors. I will thrive in my correction career through improved critical thinking traits, abilities, and attitudes.

To sum up, correctional officers face various problems due to inmate-related fights, which can only be solved with the right skills and abilities an officer can solve. A real-world scenario such as a prison break requires critical thinking skills from the correctional officer. Right attitude and abilities are also essential requirements in maintaining the situation. In such a scenario, I will use my critical thinking to interrogate the root cause, define the nature of the issue, gather and evaluate accurate information, and devise an approach to the scenario. Thus, improving one’s critical thinking skills, abilities and attitude is key to the adequate performance of a correction career.
