Just as with any profession, the role of the advanced registered nurse was born out of necessity. The official movement of advanced nursing can be traced back to the 1960’s, specifically in response to the establishment of the Medicare and Medicaid ACT in 1965 by President Johnson (Brenan, 2019). There was a significant influx of patients seeking healthcare, particularly the underserved and pediatric populations and to meet this need, the role of the advance practice registered nurse was solidified, realizing the importance they could play in the medical treatment of patients. As decades progressed, the need for primary care providers, particularly in rural areas continued to exist and in response, many APRN programs were born. As of 2019, there were over 400 APRN programs offered and 270,000 APRNs registered within the United States (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). Even though these are big strides towards more accessible health care, there are still many challenges that exist when it comes to allowing APRNs to practice to their full scope and potential. To date, only 22 states allow the APRN full scope of practice. The remainder of the states have limited or restricted independent practice of an APRN. According to the Institute of Medicines 2010 future of medicine report, allowing APRNs to fully practice according to their license and scope of practice was seen as a goal in order to meet the needs of the increased demands in the health care industry (DeNisco & Barker, 2019).
As the current population ages, the need for primary care providers will need to mirror those needs by starting with allowing APRNs to be part of the health care team in charge of not only their medical needs and concerns but treating the patients holistically and in a way that only those who have entered the nursing profession can. In fact, a recent study showed that patients felt APRNs listened to them and their concerns versus a physician (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). They also felt that they weren’t just given a temporary fix and were treated as a whole person. And with nursing being the most trusted profession , it seems natural that medical management be incorporated with a health care provider that knows the patient well.
