Safe medication management is an essential practice for nursing professionals. As a nursing professional, I have learned that it is critical to maintaining safe and accurate medication administration. I have also learned that safe administration of medicine requires sound decision-making techniques and clinical judgment. As a nurse, I am responsible for ensuring a comprehensive understanding of medication applicability and its implication for patient safety. The erroneous administration of medicine significantly impacts patients’ healthcare and my career. I have also learnt of the various orders that a nurse should be familiar with during clinical practice. The orders include routine, PRN, standing, STAT, titration, and one-time orders. Thus, I have to follow the guidelines for safe medication administration.

Some of the principles of safe medication administration include checking for allergies, being vigilant during the preparation of patient medication, being diligent in all medication measures, and using checklist and memory aids. For example, I will rely strictly on the checklists and memory aids to avoid errors during medication administration as a nurse. I will also use the principle of preventing workarounds, especially during a patient’s medication process, to safeguard the well-being of patients. Safe medication administration also provides the principle of clarifying order and unclear procedures. As a nurse, I will always enquire for clarifications rather than assuming of unclear medication administration process. Safe medication administration provides the use of available technology while administering medications. In my nursing practice, I will use the Bar-code scanning (eMAR) to administer medication and embrace computerized physician orders to lower errors during medication administration. A significant medication principle requires a nurse to ensure the medication is appropriate for use. As a result, I will keep my patients safe by providing the medication is not expired before administering it.
