Discussion #6 is another exercise in Rogerian Argument. In 100-250 words, write a first paragraph for a paper in Rogerian Style on the topic of whether school-sponsored prayer in public schools should be allowed. Think about structuring this paragraph in the “On the one hand/On the other hand” format (but don’t SAY “On the one hand…) Give equal weight to each side of the argument.
I know this a particularly contentious issue, but remember that any controversial topic has valid arguments on both sides, otherwise there would be no controversy. Seeing the big picture will make your argument stronger because you’ve considered both sides. One last hint here: prayer IS allowed in public schools, so you might want to find out how that works. A little bit of fact-checking can go a long way, but if you do use a quote or a paraphrase from an outside source, remember you MUST ATTRIBUTE it (by saying, “According to . . .) .
