* What are the reasons many nurses do not actively engage in lobbying efforts?
Nurses are responsible for providing adequate and quality care for their patients. They do this by advocating for their patients and themselves within their organizations. Factors such as a low-self esteem can affect their ability to advocate for themselves (Madigan et al., 2023). Nurses participation in policy making laws is essential since they are the ones that work directly with patients implementing these policies. Nurses knowledge, practice, and understanding of the drawbacks and necessary changes are pivotal for the development of future health care policies (Madigan et al., 2023). Some of the obstacles for nurses include lack of competency, knowledge, and understanding of one’s opportunities to participate in policy-making. Other aspects that also affect nurses in policy development include inadequate collaborative actions, understaffing, and diminished leadership roles. The overall understaffing in the nursing field forces nurses to perform their primary duties serving patients and does not allocate enough time to participate in policy-making (Hajizadeh et al., 2021). The result of not being heard professionally is that the contribution of nursing to patient care is not articulated and not recognized as important.
* What actions can nurses take to encourage themselves and their peers to get involved politically and lobby for specific issues such as healthcare policy changes? Provide a detailed example.
Some actions that can be taken to promote involvement in lobbying participation include accessibility to resources, support from political sectors, education, and a supportive organizational structure. Lack or resources is one of the barriers to lobbying in nursing, for this reason nurses should be able to have resources that help them develop new policies. Another important factor is having support, gaining external support was mentioned as one of the sub-themes for creating a positive work environment (Hajizadeh et al., 2021). Preparing nursing students to participate in health policy is critical to ensuring the nursing workforce can effect the plans, structure and financing of health care (Hajizadeh et al., 2021).

Hello class,
What are the reasons many nurses do not actively engage in lobbying efforts?
Several factors can act as barriers for nurses to become involved in health policy making. These factors include sources limitations, insufficient time, political knowledge, heavy workloads, and gender issues, negative images about nurses, management supports, and fear to encounter with others beliefs that negatively affect nurses in policy making (Hajizadeh, 2021). Two of the major frequent reason nurses do not actively engage is because of insufficient knowledge on the health policy and lack of resources.
What actions can nurses take to encourage themselves and their peers to get involved politically and lobby for specific issues such as healthcare policy changes? Provide a detailed example.
Nurses have a valuable hands-on perspective when caring for patients and how healthcare systems affect the patient’s lives. Nurses can get involved by participating in state and national associations, they have groups responsible for lobbying legislators and impacting policy that affects administration of healthcare (Morris, 2023). Nurses can also attend legislative sessions to learn how the system works and understand how decisions are made. Furthermore, nurses can also build relationships with start lawmakers, participate on national boards, and collaborate with lobbyists. National nursing organizations work with lobbyists to promote agendas that protect patient care and nursing staff. This could be a good place to begin developing a relationship with lobbyists (Morris, 2023). Nurses can encourage their peers to get involved by sharing the informed learned.
