It’s very possible that at some point in the not-so-distant future, when you are a licensed Social Worker, you will be asked to lead a group. This assignment is designed with that day in mind. When you think of your future goals, what is one group you would love to lead?
For this assignment, you are going to design your dream group. To help increase your knowledge of the factors that must be considered when designing a group, and in preparation for leading your own group, draft a proposal for the group you really want to lead.
Instructions
To get started, review Chapter 4 of your text; keep the information on these pages in mind as you work on your dream group proposal. Additionally, for this assignment, assume that this is a voluntary group.
Your group proposal should contain the following elements:
Identify the type of group and describe the focus/topic(s) of the group’s work.
Which theoretical approach would you use for your dream group? What makes this approach comfortable for you? What components of this approach will you use in your dream group?
Group age level—is this a group for adults or children?
Recruitment of members—how will members be brought in?
How will you announce the group?
Prescreening of group members.
Formulate the questions you will ask to ensure that the group member would benefit from the group.
Fitness for group participation.
Provide a list of the questions you will ask yourself in order to determine if a group member fits the group. (Some ideas to help you get started with questions are on p. 72 of the text.)
Format of the group.
Will the group be open or closed? Provide rationale for the format of the group.
Group type
Will it be a homogenous or heterogeneous group? Provide rationale for group type.
Group meeting location.
Where will group meetings be held?
Group size.
Describe the ideal group size.
Group meeting frequency.
How many times will you meet, for how long, and how often?
Term of the group.
Will the group be short term or long term? Provide rationale for the term of the group.
