For your Research Paper you may write about a character, issue, or theme from any of the required course readings from weeks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8. The following are a few possible paper topics: 1) the character of Emily Grierson in Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”; 2) the struggle for identity in H.C. Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling”; 3) the conflict or tension between the protagonist and the antagonist in Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”; 4) the importance of beauty in Poe’s “The Oval Portrait”; 5) the theme of love or the theme of suffering in “A Sorrowful Woman”; 6) The Gothic aspects or features of Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”; 7) the importance of the setting in Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”; 8) the theme of the outsider in ” A Rose for Emily”; 9) the conflict between good and evil in N. Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown”; 10) the struggle of the narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” to find happiness and contentment These are just possible topics. You do not have to choose one of these, but each of the above would be an interesting paper topic.
This paper must use and cite at least two peer-reviewed sources. This paper should show a thoughtful analysis of one or more of the works of literature studied between week 2 and week 8 and engage in critical thinking on the topic.
Papers without appropriate documentation and Work Cited/Bibliographic entries will receive a lower grade. Plagiarism will result in a grade of zero for the assignment. This paper is a work of academic argument. You should not include any extensive summary. Your focus must be analysis of the literary work. Bibliographies should have a minimum of three entries: the primary text (the literature you are analyzing) and at least two sources for research.
It must be constructed as a complete essay (an interesting introduction with a clear and concise thesis
statement, body paragraphs containing supporting details, and a conclusion that wraps up loose
ends).
This paper should be a thoughtful analysis of a literary work from the course and should show critical
thinking about the topic. It should Not be a summary of the plot’s events.
