OBJECTIVE: After completing the persuasive speech, students should be able to: Identify their target audience and the areas where the target audience might be persuaded Develop strategies designed to increase an oppositional audience’s support for your position Make language choices that appeal to an oppositional audience Extemporize a speech in a lively manner The following criteria may be helpful: Is the problem one that has contributed to the decline of a previous civilization (war, poverty, caste, tyranny, disease)? Is the problem one that has caused or causes human suffering? Is the problem one that limits human achievement? Is the problem one that threatens life and/or property? Is the problem one that prevents or severely limits growth and development? Is the problem one that undermines well-established and universally recognized goals and values? Is the problem one that forces an important choice upon us? Choosing Lines of Argument There are many ways of establishing the significance of a problem. Select the line of argument best suited to your subject, your audience, and yourself. The following lines of argument are among those to consider: Show that the problem is a source of danger, suffering, or degradation to those who experience it. Show that the problem, directly or indirectly, injures the audience. Show that the problem prevents the operation of an ideal and growth toward it. Show that the problem is a fundamental one. Show that the problem is recognized by others. Show that the problem makes our society or the institutions in it operate less effectively than they should. Show that the audience has once before been harmed by the problem. Show that the problem interferes with the goals of the audience. Show that eradicating the problem would lead to a better life. Show that the problem is increasing or worsening. Persuasive Presentation Assignment The presentation is required to be 4 – 5 minutes in length, use some type of university-acceptable presentational aid, use a minimum of 4 sources, have a typed outline that follows the format (link below), and be persuasive in nature. Students will write a 5-7 page (including bibliography), double-spaced, 1-inch margin speech “presentation outline” and upload it before the due date. Speeches will be presented during the class immediately following the due date. Article Sources All sources (at least 4) must come from the library database https://guides.rider.edu/home (Academic Premier, Opposing Viewpoints, JSTOR, EbscoHost extensions, etc) Sources must be referenced in a Bibliography/Works Cited page at the end of the outline in APA format.
