College Composition II
A rebuttal argument is one where you argue against an existing argument. Rebuttal arguments involve
refutation (identifying where the argument is wrong, flawed, or not complete) and/or offer counter
arguments (offering argumentative points that differ from the original argument). Choose one of your
text/sources you have found on your issue for the rebuttal argument. And you must use at least two
sources to support your rebuttal claims.
The goal of a rebuttal argument is to dismiss or weaken an argument so that it becomes irrelevant or
questionable to an audience who might be or has been persuaded to accept it.
Learning Goals for the Rebuttal Argument
● To help you develop invention/idea development processes
● To let you show that you understand the rhetorical expectations of a rebuttal argument and can use and shape information to achieve that purpose.
● To develop your skills to closely read and critique an argument.
● To develop your persuasive skills and your ability and appropriately select rhetorical appeals
for a desired purpose showing audience awareness.
● To develop your ability to make meaning out of multiple texts (the primary article as well as
your sources) to achieve a rhetorical purpose and incorporate those text effectively and fluidly
(using signal phrases, contextual information, and appropriate citation).
What to do in an Rebuttal Argument
● You need to determine the elements of the argument that can be refuted. For example, it could
be one or more of the following:
Is it the content/evidence of the argument?
Is it how the evidence is presented?
Is it how the argument is constructed?
Is it an aspect of who is making the argument?
● You need to determine the grounds of the refutation
Is it an aspect of sufficiency, typicality, accuracy, or relevance?
Is it an aspect of bias or extremism?
Is it an aspect of civility or reasoning (or the lack there of)?
● You need to determine how you will support your rebuttal —in other words what will be your
evidence to support your claims about the argument? You must use at least two sources in support of your rebuttal.

How to Structure this Essay
● Introductory Paragraph: Introduce your research topic/issue and provide a brief background
like you did in your background report. Then briefly discuss the source you are using to refute
and the argument it presents about your research topic/issue. End the introductory paragraph
with a clear argument that includes a claim and reasons that refutes the argument being made
in the source you chose for rebuttal.
● Body Paragraphs: After your introduction, you will dedicate most of the essay to creating body
paragraphs that contain the two sources you chose for your research topic/issue that supports
your rebuttal argument. Make sure to incorporate at least 1-2 quotations from you sources in
each body paragraph to support your thesis. While quotes are important, keep in mind that
your paper should not go overboard with quotes—don’t let the quotations speak for you,
instead explain why these quotes are important to your overall argument through analysis and
connections. Also try to paraphrase and summarize main ideas in your sources. Generally a
paper should not exceed 20-30 percent in quotes. Be strategic and assertive about the quotes
you use. Each body paragraph should end with a concluding sentence that builds on your
original argument in the intro and offers some complexity to your original thesis.
● Conclusion: Summarize all of the main ideas, arguments, and analysis you generated in the
entire essay. Remind the reader how all of your evidence ultimately refutes the argument you
rebutted. End with a strong concluding sentence that places your research topic/issue in a
larger cultural/social context. In a sense, why does this all matter and why is this ultimately
important for the development of your research topic/issue.
