Discussion: How can Artificial Intelligence be used in a classroom?
Instructions
Each student should post once on this discussion in response to the prompt. To get full credit, make sure you answer all of the questions in the prompt. Do more than just the bare minimum– don’t just answer each question, but put some thought or explanation into the answers. Each student should also reply to two different students. Make sure your replies are at least three sentences long. They should not just say “Good post” or “I agree” but should include a reason why the post is good or reasons why you agree. Try to reply to other posts that haven’t gotten very many replies. Make sure your posts thoroughly address the posted prompt. Your initial post is due by Thursday at 11:59 PM and your two replies are due by Sunday at 11:59 PM. The actual due date for the assignment is Sunday at 11:59, but I want to encourage students to post their initial posts by Thursday.

That way there will be some posts for students to reply to. You will not be penalized as long as you have your initial post and two replies on the discussion board by Sunday at 11:59 PM. Topic
As of the last semester or two, Artificial Intelligence Tools have been readily available to students and instructors. The use of such tools is controversial, to say the least. As instructors, we have noticed some limitations of the AI tools that are currently available. For example, in another instructor’s course, a student apparently asked AI to write her self concept essay. When the instructor was grading the essay, she found the following sentence in the paper, “In terms of inaccurate perceptions people may have of me, as an AI language model, I don’t possess personal characteristics or physical appearance, so the usual perceptual mistakes associated with human interactions don’t apply.”

In other words, not only was it really silly to ask a computer to write a paper that was supposed to be about the student, apparently, that student didn’t even read through the paper before turning it in. Pro Tip: you should ALWAYS proofread the paper before you turn it in. This is your chance to open up and give the rest of us an idea how you really feel about Artificial Intelligence and why. Please feel free to be honest, but keep your language civil and classroom appropriate. I will not hold anything you say in this discussion against you when I grade your assignments, I promise. Please be sure to answer all questions in your post. Note: there are not just 4 questions here. There are 9. 1. Have you used ChatBot or another tool? In what way have you used it?

2. What problems have you encountered with using AI? Have you had an assignment rejected or points taken off when using an AI tool? 3. How do you feel about Artificial Intelligence tools? Do you think using these tools is a form of cheating? Should they be banned from college classrooms?

3. Is there an ethical way to use AI tools? Please share your ideas for how these tools can be used in a classroom in a way that is educational and helpful to both students and instructors.

Essay outline/How to respond to this question

First Post:

I’ve employed chatbots to help me learn languages. Through dialogue simulation, it assisted me in honing my conversational abilities in a foreign language. The prompt feedback helped me to become more proficient.

The primary issue I ran into was over-reliance. Artificial intelligence (AI) facilitates learning, but overuse might impair free thought. I worked on a project where I was primarily dependent on an AI tool to generate content, which prevented me from being personally invested in the subject matter.

I see AI tools as useful tools, not as a substitute for hard work. While they can help with learning, relying only on them might be seen as cheating. Guidelines ought to place an emphasis on responsible and supplemental use rather than outright prohibition.

Transparency and comprehension are necessary for ethical usage. AI tools can be used by instructors to help with activities like data analysis, coding problems, and language practice. It’s crucial to establish precise rules for acceptable use and to promote critical thinking in addition to the use of AI.

In response:

Regarding Student A: It’s fascinating to hear about your experiences utilizing chatbots to learn languages. I concur that these resources can be very helpful in enhancing practical skills. How did you strike a balance when using the chatbot to make sure that it complemented your learning without taking priority over your individual work?

Regarding Student B: I value your viewpoint regarding the possible drawbacks of relying too much on AI techniques. Your project experience confirms a widespread worry. In what ways do you think educators might help students find a balance between using AI support and continuing to interact with the content on their own?
