Choose ANY ONE TOPIC from the long list below and develop a ‘reading response’
A response paper is an analysis of a literary reading. It is similar to an essay in that you need an introduction, but that introduction is NOT a retelling of the story, it is instead a brief paragraph that introduces your thoughts on the prompt topic you choose. The remainder of your response uses examples from the readings, with exposition of why that example works in answering the question.
Reading Response Assignment
What is a reading response?
A Reading Response is not a summary of your reading.
A Reading Response is a way of writing about your thinking about the reading, or your reaction(s) to a reading.
A Reading Response is not a formal paper, but should be well thought-out, fully developed, and carefully written, nevertheless. It should demonstrate not only that you have carefully read the text (or more than one time), but also that you have thought carefully about the text and engaged with it in some way.
Think about not only the text overall, but also smaller sections of it. How does one incident or phrase or symbol echo the larger meaning of the work?
An effective Reading Response will demonstrate that you have thoroughly read and understood the reading (or that you ask questions that reveal thorough reading).
It might develop connections between the reading and the themes of the course or discussions posts and power points / lecture and demonstrate that you have considered the implications of the readings.
Be specific about the parts of the questions you’re discussing, provide details from the text to back up any assertions you may make by quoting directly from the text, and finally, pay attention to grammar and mechanics.
Length and format: Your response needs to be at least two and one-half to three pages. This is not a ‘paper’ no cover page required. Citations: . Please follow the MLA guidelines noted in the Module “MLA Citation Guidelines” . FORMAT Arial 11 pt. with 1 ½ spacing between lines. You will use the Turnitin assignment link on CANVAS to submit the paper.

Regarding this assignment: if you need review I recommend you review the power-points associated with the Module: Literature of Ancient India, the readings in your text The Ramayana, and the pdf “Jones pdf of The Mahabharata.
How does the Ramayana envision and dramatize dharma? Consider, for example, Rama’s immediate acceptance and understanding of the exile without the “slightest displeasure” (Norton 636); despite the fact that we know there was intrigue in the court. Look for other examples of ‘dharma’ as you perceive it and highlight those to support your response.
The Ramayana sets forth the model of sacred kingship-the idea that the king, as father-provider of his people, is heaven’s representative to the people and the people’s representative to the gods. From your reading what are the stresses and cracks in this model? (note this is the antithesis to question one – what are Rama’s flaws as both a character and role-model for kingship)
The German philosopher Hegel contended that ultimately what is real is rational and what is rational is real. A verse in the Mahabharata says: “The unreal has no being; /The real never ceases to be.” What does the Mahabharata imply about what is ultimately real and what is not? (consider the events of the dice game; battle scenes, divine conception) as examples).
From The Bhagavad-Gita (see p 671 in the Discuss the ramifications of samsara against the backdrop of the relationship between Arjuna and Krishna. What is Arjuna’s dharma, how does it impact behavior in war, with his son?
How does the dice game both in the text and the film encapsulate the nature family duty, deference to elders, roles of women (brothers, fathers etc.)? Also discuss the role of Bhishma and Krishna in this crucial event in the story. Note: to adequately address this topic you should read this section in the pdf of the Mahabharata and watch the YouTube video. There are more than enough details to create and excellent response.
How do the individual battle scenes mirror the warrior society, rules, obligations, death scenes especially? Note: to adequately address this topic you should read this section in the pdf of the Mahabharata and watch the YouTube video. There are more than enough details to create and excellent response
Compare the depictions of warrior society in India where India was not united during the long years of wars between rival princes; as represented in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Both portray events based on the realities and ideals of a warrior society but with details exaggerated for the sense of epic distinction. After discussing briefly the warrior caste and their role discuss thoroughly how the Mahabharata epic projects a grave and realistic effect overall, whereas the Ramayana is magical and fantastic. How does each epic tale utilize either the elements of the fairy tale or the harsh reality of war?
