According to the CDC, “Health equity is achieved when every person has the opportunity to ‘attain his or her full health potential’ and no one is ‘disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of social position or other socially determined circumstances.’ Health inequities are reflected in differences in length of life; quality of life; rates of disease, disability, and death; severity of disease; and access to treatment.” In health, equity means that all people have the same or similar opportunities for health regardless of their social or economic status, the color of their skin, where they live, or other factors beyond their control. Health equity is about ensuring that everyone, regardless of circumstances, has the opportunity to be healthy, stay healthy, and live as long as possible. It is about fairness, justice, and human rights.
When Americans live in underserved areas, healthcare can be difficult to access. Living more than 20 miles from the closest physician can make it difficult for patients to receive quality care.
