Gang activity is pervasive in many communities. Initial gang associations have now evolved into million dollar crime organizations that are highly organized to commit human and drug trafficking. United States gangs network internationally to conduct illegal business that trickles down into our communities. The judicial and legal response to strictly enforce and penalize gang operations has had little effect on mitigating gang activity. Despite our best efforts, our communities are still subjected to the dangers caused by gangs.

Why do juveniles join gangs and why is it important to understand their reasoning for joining gangs?

What are the most common police and system responses to gang activity both in the U.S. and Latin America?

What is considered to be the most effective intervention by law enforcement officials for responding to gangs? Why is it the most effective intervention?

What is the most common educational intervention used to prevent juveniles from joining gangs or to motivate them to leave their gang? What impact has it had on youth involved in gangs?

Are the programs instituted in Latin American countries substantively different from the programs in the U.S.? Do they appear to be more effective?

Your written paper should be 2-3 pages in length not counting the title and reference pages, which you must include.

Use terms, evidence, and concepts from class readings.

Cite at least three scholarly sources for this assignment. Scholarly resources include: peer-reviewed journal articles, books, the class textbook, or reports/documents from the government (.gov sites). A scholarly source does not include general sources from the internet (.com, .org, .edu, and .net sites are not scholarly). Scholarly resources should be current (no older than five years). If the class textbook is used as a source, then two other scholarly sources must be used.
