Practice Experience Objectives:
Analyze the processes a nurse leader encounters in the clinical setting as it relates to Patient Centered Care, Teamwork and collaboration, Evidenced-Based Practice, Quality improvement, Safety, and Informatics (QSEN competencies)
Apply concepts of leadership to information obtained through nursing leadership interview
This activity aligns with the following learning outcomes:
Course Outcome 1: Assess organizational components of an agency
Course Outcome 2: Evaluate models of nursing care delivery
Course Outcome 9: Examine nursing leadership and management skills in a variety of settings using the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of professional nursing practice
This project builds on previous content and modules in the course.
You have two options for this project:
For this assignment you will conduct an interview with a nurse leader in the agency of your choice. The goal of the assignment is to develop knowledge and identify characteristics of personal and professional leadership. A sample of how the paper should be organized is also provided.
Identify someone whom you believe is a leader in a health care agency of your choice.
How did you become a nurse leader?
What is your leadership style? (you may need to briefly administer the leadership style survey if they are not already familiar with this)
What are your roles and responsibilities at your agency?
Describe the organizational structure of your facility?
What Model of Care delivery is utilized at your facility and/or on your unit? Why does this work best?
What is an ethical dilemma you have faced as a nurse leader and how did you handle it?
In terms of fiscal management, how are planning and budgeting and planning realated as you see it? What factors for you consider when planning the budget? How does QI impact budget and planning?
What skills do you use to successfully communicate, delegate, and motivate your workforce?
If you had to give one statement of advice to new nurse leaders, what would that be?
Analyze the answers provided to you by the nurse leader you chose. Prepare a paper which describes and evaluates all of the above information and integrate leadership and management theory from the course content This should be 5-6 pages and that number does not include Title and Reference pages. Do not identify the person you interview by name, use initials. The transcriipt of the interview is to be attached as an appendix (this can by typed or you may submit a recording as long as you have the permission of the person you are interviewing )You must include at least 3 scholarly articles from a peer reviewed journal in addition to textbooks and websites (if you choose to use them) to support your paper content.
Writing should reflect baccalaureate-level writing standards and have few, if any, spelling, grammar, or syntax errors. Additionally, papers should reflect current APA format requirements. Points will be deducted for missing or underdeveloped components and errors in style and formatting.
