Part 2 – Evidence-based Practice Paper Using your approved practice question, gather recent reliable evidence from primary research articles that help answer the question. After reviewing and critiquing the articles, write a 10-15-page APA-formatted paper that explains the background and importance of the research topic, identifies key concepts underlying the topic, synthesizes the literature, draws conclusions based on the findings, and makes recommendations for practice and future research.
The paper must contain the following elements, all written in APA format:
Title page: Appropriate formatting with suitable running head. Abstract: 150-250-word summary of your paper. Keywords are listed (~ 4-7 keywords/phrases) Introduction: Presents a global overview of the topic that explains the main elements, identifies key terminology, highlights the significance of the topic, and justifies the need for looking further into this topic. The introduction should clearly state the research question that you aim to answer. Primary research, review articles, government websites, and other reliable resources are appropriate resources for this section.
Body of the paper: Presents the research related to your topic that can help answer your question. The body of the paper is not a list of article summaries. Instead, it is the integration of research findings organized by themes related to your topic. For example, you may organize the flow of your paper around subtopics directly relevant to your research question, or you may choose to organize the research around different study designs (cross-sectional observation, longitudinal observational, short-term intervention, randomized clinical trials). See the Recommended Resources and seek guidance if needed.
The body of your paper should include a minimum of five original research articles (not reviews or meta-analyses) published in the last ten years. Original research articles should make up the majority of the resources used in the body of your paper and should be used to justify your conclusion. Conclusions: Remember that the goal of your paper is to answer a question. Thus, you should provide an answer that reflects your synthesis. • Summarize your findings.
• Present your conclusion, followed by any specifications that are important for practice. Your conclusions should be supported by the critique of the literature presented in the body of the paper. o Keep in mind, critical thinking and judgment will be required to answer your question. It will not be a straight-forward answer and research may be conflicting. o Justify your conclusions and explain knowledge/research gaps. o Be clear about your conclusion and any recommendations for practice. For example, if you asked a question about supplementation, you want to include a recommended supplementation protocol (dose/dose range, form, frequency, duration, side-effects that warrant discontinuing, length of time until benefits are noted, etc.). However, do not go beyond what you can support from the research (e.g., don’t recommend a supplement form or dose if the research doesn’t justify it). Keep this clear and concise. o Your conclusion should be based on the strength of the evidence, risk-assessment, and accessibility to the user. (See recommended resources listed in Canvas). For example, if very strong data support a benefit of an intervention, and the risk to the user is low, yet the cost of the intervention is beyond what a typical consumer can afford, this should be considered and explained. • Qualify your response by identifying any limitations in the research. o For example, if your practice question is about the effect of a substance on athletic performance in the general public, but all of the research was performed in athletes, you should qualify this as a limitation. o Note that limitations in research do not prohibit you from making practice-based recommendations based on reasonable extrapolation from available reliable data. Limitations can be an area for future research recommendations, which you should include in your paper. • Be sure that your final answer to your question is clear and complete, justified by your critique of the research and not your opinion, and offers recommendatiobcins for practice and future research.
