Entry 2: Think about a past performance evaluation in which you received both positive and negative feedback. Describe how the appraisal accurately reflected your performance and how it did not. How would you change the way the performance appraisal was conducted if you were the evaluator? (350-500 words in length.)
I once received a performance evaluation stating I was very detail-oriented, easy to get along with, and an effective communicator. However, the negative feedback that I received was that I am not stern enough, and allow staff too much autonomy. While I appreciated the positive feedback, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the negative feedback. I did not know how to change my approach to staff without also affecting the very same positive feedback I received. It seemed to be conflicting. If I was the evaluator I wouldn’t have just written the feedback on a paper and asked someone to sign it. Instead, I would have pulled them to the side throughout the course of the performance review, and explained why a specific action can be interpreted as “not stern enough.” Additionally, if there were any follow-up questions in regards to the feedback, I’d be available for the discussion to occur, and I’d be prepared with suggestions, and or/ examples as to when the specific action occurred and how it could have been handled.
