Objective
The objective of this essay is for the student to demonstrate a clear understanding of an individual urban legend, and clearly present an analysis in the form of a standard college essay. An expository essay, the result of explaining the concept of what an urban legend is, requires a well thought out thesis statement that will explain the writer’s objective as well as clear arguments that will later serve as topic sentences. Follow the pattern of discussion demonstrated in class. One possible approach is to analyze the urban legend in light of the characteristics described in class. Explain how the legend you have selected demonstrates these characteristics. As discussed in class, writing does not have to be frightening or difficult. Follow the model demonstrated in class. Additionally, this essay will require usage of MLA style, as we continue to work on MLA documentation. Students will have to find sources, and these sources should be properly documented to avoid the perception of plagiarism.
Finding a Legend
Choose an urban legend of your choice, one that interests you. Avoid the legends we discussed in class. There are, literally, thousands of legends to be found on the Internet. If you are having difficulty finding a suitable legend, the instructor is available to assist.
Developing Your Argument
• Create a clear, well-defined thesis statement. As demonstrated in class, your thesis should be presented in one sentence. The thesis should state your opinion and focus and forecast the essay’s main arguments. In your thesis statement tell me how you plan on demonstrating that this story is indeed an urban legend. Remember that these arguments will in turn become your topic sentences for each of your body paragraphs.
• Use appropriate explanatory strategies such as definition, classification, comparison-contrast, example, illustration, and cause-effect arguments. Use elements of the legend to help illustrate the points you wish to make. You need to draw on sources to develop your explanation.
Additional Requirements
Sources: Your essay should include a minimum of two sources. Most students will find that two sources will be required in order to show variation of a story. For this assignment both sources may be from the Internet. Don’t merely string together information from sources. Synthesize your own ideas, knowledge, and conclusions with references from the legend you’ve selected. Do not use web sites like Wikipedia, Ask.com, or Yahoo Answers. Source material should contribute something to your paper that you cannot: specific facts, clarification or emphasis of a point, a voice with authority in a specific area, or illustration of the controversy or complexity around your concept.
Format: Your final draft should be 600-700 words, at least five paragraphs long, typed, double-spaced, carefully proofread, and formatted in MLA style. Follow the sample format found on page 588 of The Norton Field Guide to Writing, and include in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
