For this discussion, read the course materials and resources in this module. Read the essays about Cindy Sherman and Chapter 8: Art and Identity from the open textbook for context about the relationship between identity and art. The artwork of Cindy Sherman evolved from her influential untitled film stills series, where she always photographed herself as the subject of her own work while playing a wide range of roles, to the use of digital photography techniques that she publishes on her own Instagram account as artworks. She continues to remain as the primary subject of her own photography, and continues to play unique roles as part of her images.
Explore this week’s topic and the photography of Cindy Sherman to address the following questions in your posting (and then respond to two classmates):
Based on your analysis of Cindy Sherman’s photography, from the untitled film stills to her most recent images on Instagram, identify one image in particular that you find most interesting or compelling. Why did you select it and what is it saying to the viewer?
What does Cindy Sherman’s photography say about individual identity in a digital world?
What ethical issue(s) does she raise in her artwork?
Please note that when you conduct your research and examine some of the related web sites you may find some images that are more provocative or “controversial” than others. Although these are publicly facing web pages, please be aware that you are not required to view or link to images that you are not comfortable with (for any reason). When conducting your research, try to use titles and text as markers for the images that may appear and avoid those that you may find difficult or uncomfortable. Please be careful with the image you select for our discussion forum and be sensitive to how other students may respond to it. This artist challenges representations that are exploitive so it is important to have that understanding when viewing and referencing her work. We don’t need to avoid controversy but we do want to go beyond the surface and have a full understanding of the larger context and what the artist is saying in her photography. Make sure that your analysis includes reference to the readings and not just to the images to gain a full awareness of the artist and her work.
Link to the image in your discussion response by clicking on the “advanced editor options ” and then copy the URL of the image in the post (Do not upload the image, just link to it).
Discussion Grading and General Guidelines
Write your initial response in the Moodle Discussion with a 200-word minimum, and respond to two other postings from your classmates at 150 words each. Your initial post and response to peers should be a continuation of the initial topic. Read the entire thread so that you are aware of what your classmates are saying in the conversation. Use the discussion as an opportunity to ask questions in an informed way, offer comparisons, and engage with your peers in an academic dialogue. Do not just summarize the readings. Assert a perspective in your own voice and support with research.
Use quotation marks for any direct quote but do not quote more than one or two sentences from the readings. We really want to hear your voice! Use an appropriate citation style (MLA, APA or Chicago) to cite references, websites, or anything you comment on that someone else said. Be sure to provide a working link if you are referencing something that isn’t listed in the course.
Please review the Discussion Evaluation Rubric before posting your response. I look forward to seeing you in the conversation!
