In the 1950’s, television portrayed the American family as a married Mom and Dad with two biological children. Any divergence from this, such as a childless couple, step families, divorced or single parent households, was considered an anomaly or an alternative arrangement. An evolution of culture, social mores, tolerance, media, acceptance, and personal belief systems have created a society that recognizes a variety of definitions of family.
What is family? Who do you consider is in your family? What are the different criteria used in defining families? Discuss the social changes you believe have influenced the definition of family since 1950. Provide scholarly sources to support these social changes. Discuss how your immediate family or family of origin is similar and different from what you would consider being the dominant culture’s definition of family.
