Write a 1-page essay over one of these prompts, it can not be longer then 1 page.
1. Tell us your story. What unique opportunities or challenges have you experienced throughout your high school career that have shaped who you are today?
2. Some students have an identity, an interest, or a talent that defines them in an essential way. If you are one of these students, then tell us about yourself.
– You can use covid and its difficulties in a prompt if it helps with ideas.

the book name is Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels” by Scott McCloud
Step 1: Read a chapter from your book
Start by reading a chapter (or two) from your book. You don’t really need to read the chapters in order, so choose one that interests you. I recommend a few chapters in class too.
While you’re reading your book, watch for examples of the concepts we covered in class. Here are the concepts we’ll use for this essay:
The definition of design that we’re using for this class. If you want a reminder, look up Herbert Simon’s definition of design. I’ll also talk about it in class.
The 3 roles of design: user, maker, and designer. Pay attention to how these roles affect each other. For example, how do the user’s needs and desires affect the designer’s choices? How do they affect the maker’s working conditions? Etc.
Step 2: Pick a Design
Pick a design from your chapter. Devices or tools are the easiest options, but you could also choose something else, like a building, a movie prop or a new manufacturing material.
Step 2: Write a short essay
Write a short, informal essay about this topic. Imagine you’re writing this for a friend who isn’t studying design. You can use informal, conversational language. But you also need to include enough information that your friend understands what you’re saying.
Your essay should be 750-1250 words long, and it should include this information:
The name of the book you’re reading, and the chapter(s) you chose for this assignment. Pick a design from your chapter. Tell us about it. What is it? What does it do?
In your own words, what is the definition of design that we are using for this class? How does our definition of design apply to the design from your book? What is the situation? How does the design improve the situation?
For this design, who is the designer? Who is the maker? Who is the user? Describe their experiences. How do these roles influence each other?
Finally, evaluate the design. What makes it a good design? What makes it a bad one? Did it completely solve a problem, or is there room for improvement? Did it solve one problem, but create other problems?
Citing other people’s work
If you include information from an outside source, be sure to tell us how you found it. Use an informal citation, like this:
This online guide Links to an external site.from the Design Institute of San Diego has excellent guidelines for using informal citations.
It’s informal, but it gives us all the information we need to find the article ourselves. Also, the article that I linked really is an excellent guide. Please read it
Step 3: Evaluate your work
This is your checklist to make sure you’ve included all of the important stuff. It will also help us find everything when we grade your assignment. We’ll use something like it for all of our deliverables.
Highlight the important stuff
Read through your assignment. Use your word-processor’s highlighter tool to mark these things:
The title of your book
The title of the chapter(s) you read
A description of the design you chose
How our definition of design applies to this design
A description of the user, maker and designer
Your analysis of the design. How is it good? How is it bad?
Some of these sections may be several sentences long. Don’t worry about highlighting the whole thing. Just highlight the first few words, or the first sentence.

Part 2
Part of the requirements of this class is exercise. As the Catalog Description states, “A combination of physical activity and lecture providing regular exercise to develop physical fitness.”
You are required to exercise 3 times per week.
Each week I will provide 3 recorded yoga classes so you can exercise at home at your convenience.
Each class is approximately 35-50 minutes long.
When you have completed all three classes you will submit your answers to the following questions.
What did you enjoy about each of the three classes? Please designate each class. For example, Class #1: I enjoyed the feeling of relaxation after I was done taking the class. You will say something about each class.
What was difficult about the class, or did anything hurt? Be specific. That way I can help. You may also ask a question and I will answer your question in the comments area when I grade your weekly exercise assignment.
Submit your assignment at the end of each module/week.
You may type your answers into the text box, or attach them in doc, Docx, or pdf.

Directions:
As the culminating assignment for the course, you are being asked to Create Your Own Paper (CYOP). Specifically, this paper asks you to identify a theoretical framework learned in the course and apply it to a movie of your choosing that depicts criminal/deviant behavior. That is, you are to select a theory and use that theory to explain, interpret, and/or analyze the criminal and/or deviant behavior observed in the movie. When developing your paper, please present and support a thesis regarding the strengths/weaknesses of your chosen theory’s ability to analyze the movie’s elements.
Structure
CYOPs should include the following sections (or versions of, at minimum):
Introduction: present your theory, include a thesis statement, and provide a roadmap for discussion.
Theory: present and describe your theory’s assumptions, tenets, concepts, variables, and relationships.
Movie: discuss the plot of the movie and the observed criminal/ deviant behavior in the film.
Connections: illustrate how the theory explains the criminal and/or deviant behavior in the movie.
Conclusion: summarize arguments for how the theory explains the film’s criminal/ deviant behavior.
Formatting:
Final (not checkpoints, see below) Papers are worth 70 points and are due last week of the course. They must be roughly 1,500-2,000 words (approximately 5 double-spaced pages) in length, not including front-end material (i.e. title page) or referencing. To support arguments being made, final papers must include at least 5 peer-reviewed/scholarly citations/sources. Submitted work must be in APA formatting, typed with: 12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced, 1 inch margins, page numbers, and APA structure. As always, your work should be well-structured, comprehensive in nature, include citations/proper referencing, and free of major spelling/grammatical issues.
CYOP Checklist:
When drafting your CYOP, please review the checklist below to ensure key elements are included:
I have a Title page with the title of my paper, my name, and date on it.
My paper is typed using Times New Roman 12-point font,
My paper has one-inch margins,
My paper is double-spaced.
My paper (not including the title page) is a minimum of 5 pages in length.
I have an introductory paragraph that introduces the theory being applied and chosen movie/media
My introductory paragraph ends with a thesis statement.
I have described the assumptions, tenets, concepts, variables, and relationships of the theory.
I have discussed the plot of the movie.
I have discussed the criminal and/or deviant behaviors observed in the movie.
I have illustrated how the theory explains the criminal and/or deviant behavior observed in the movie.
I have a concluding paragraph that summarizes the arguments I have made.
I have a reference page and have appropriately cited all work in my paper using APA format.
My paper is well-written and has been spell-checked and proof-read.
CYOP Checkpoints:
To help facilitate your CYOP, there will be 3 “checkpoint” assignments (i.e. topic selection, literature review, outline, rough draft, etc.) at 10 points each scheduled throughout the course. Given this, the sub-assignments will total 30 points while the CYOP will be worth 70 points (100 total points). Checkpoint assignments include and are due:
Checkpoint #1 – Theory and Movie Selection:Due during Lesson/Week 4
Checkpoint #2 – Literature Review and Connections: Due during Lesson/Week 8
Checkpoint #3 – Outline/Rough Draft: Due during Lesson/Week 12
