Hi Class,
Insightful response and safety and quality are both important in design. The protection and health of patients and staff is a major contributor to this; “Balancing the line of keeping settings secure and making them feel institutionalized or ‘prison-like” (Brown, 2015, in French).
If the need to feel safe in healthcare environments is not fulfilled, the patients will be less likely to return and go elsewhere for care services. It is vital to keep these spaces safe and inviting for both staff and patients. The architecture of a facility/structure and its fixed and movable elements may directly affect human performance, especially the health and safety of staff, patients, and families. Patient safety can be improved by targeting human factors in hospital construction and ensuring that residual symptoms and neurological failures leading to adverse outcomes are eliminated. This involves a multi-faceted approach, including creating a solid safety culture, redesigning programs or facilities and equipment, and technologies, mitigating cognitive error situations, and helping caregivers with designs to remove errors.
Class,
Can you think of some designs that you have experienced that help reduces anxiety? What about bringing in nature?

INTEGRATIVE LEARNING PROJECT ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
For the Integrative Learning Project Assignment, you will research a particular, authentic
company/industry or a fabricated company/industry. (No one in this course should write
anything regarding their government or organizational relationship that could create doubt about
crossing lines that would disclose confidential information of any kind. It would be better to
create a fictional situation. It is up to you to use your informed judgment.) The ILP must be
written in current APA format and must include the following major elements:
Title Page
Table of Contents
Abstract
Introduction

“As a current U.S. Navy civilian employee, I chose to focus on the way the Navy organizes competency development and psychological dispositions for its’ civilian global leaders. One thing that is important to note is the Navy’s prioritization of competency development for both its’ civilian and military leadership. This organization has outlined a Navy Leader Development Framework for the military men and women who serve on the front lines, as well as a Department of Defense (DoD) Civilian Leader Development Framework for the government employees who help behind the scenes.
In the DoD Civilian Leader Development Framework, the focus is on major competencies which include Leading Change, Leading People, Results Driven, Business Acumen, Building Coalitions and Enterprise-wide Perspective (Department of Defense, 2022). In leading change, the DoD expects civilian global leaders to balances change with continuity and addresses resistance, while maintaining an organizational vision. Leading people means leaders possess the interpersonal skills necessary to encourage others to meet the organizational vision while fostering an environment that embraces diversity, differences, trust, and teamwork. Results driven means meeting customer expectations and the goals of the organization. Global leaders are expected to problem solve and possess and entrepreneurial mindset when working through this competency (DoD, 2022). Business acumen zeros in on a global leaders’ ability to manage human, financial, and information resources strategically, a particularly crucial competency when working with the nations armed forces. Building coalitions focuses on the ability to build relationships internal to the organization, with external organizations and even foreign governments. Enterprise-wide perspective is a competency that requires global leaders to view their organizational responsibilities in the broader view of the DoD’s strategic priorities.
The Navy and DoD prioritize and organize the psychological dispositions of their global leaders through the validation of their DoD Competency Model. Waldman et al. (2011) explain the how the brain supports global leaders in their abilities to influence other’s moods, understand emotions, make crucial decisions, and problem solve. The DoD has implemented of four major leadership development programs to include Defense Civilian Emerging Leader Program (DCELP), Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP), Defense Senior Leader Development Program (DSLDP) and White House Leadership Development Program (WHLDP) (DoD, 2022). Each of these developmental programs meets leaders at a different psychological level and year or point in their career, and then focuses on key competency areas for further development. Mendenhall et al.’s (2018) of over 207 competencies more specifically details the skills necessary for global leaders’ success in the DoD’s Leadership Framework. Brain plasticity as discussed by Waldman et al. (2011) becomes increasingly important in this regard as global leaders are required to rapidly shift between competencies during their day. The DoD and Mendenhall et al. (2018) highlight agility as a valuable skill, which may often be underestimated in the leadership arena, however I believe it warrants further study.

Good morning Professor and class –
Identify 2 different processes used in your industry and classify them into process types such as job shop, batch processing, assembly line, etc. Explain the rationale for your process type classifications.
I work for a firm that solicits government contracts, and my work has always revolved around designing a successful process to ensure that we give the best service as contractors. We help government agencies by staffing their programs. I would classify our process as a project because the inputs are brought into the assignment as needed, and there is flow in our process. Also, we deal with a unique product every time we have a project to staff government programs. We bring together resources as needed while coordinating them using project management techniques that require teamwork. Process strategy is huge in government contracting to make sure that offer something different so the government will choose us but also something different to potential candidates to get the highest quality employees to fill our staffing positions.
Which companies or similar organizations in your industry would you consider to be recognized leaders in any of these process types? How does that compare to your organization?
As one of the government contractors, the firm I work for is a recognized leader in project, as our process type, since government contractors have to adhere to strict regulations. We compete with other federal contractors who also wish to staff government programs, and we provide the best people to handle any government assignment. Our process focus strategy is to ensure that we align the right people skilled enough to handle the assignment or address a need. We have often exceeded the client’s expectations. We are always developing processes to monitor how we are doing and if there is something that comes up in that process that needs changing, we have a lot of discussions to determine a new way of doing something or changing it to make it work better.
What should management focus on in managing those process types?
The selected process type impacts resources, decisions, and work methods. Therefore, management should focus on ensuring that the process type settled on is the most suitable for the industry and the specific assignment being handled. For instance, a project process may be ideal for a construction site; a job shop for a print shop; a batch process for a bakery; an assembly line for an automobile; and continuous flow for a refinery. Management must match an operation with the right process type.

Greetings Dr. Chin and Colleagues
The key to any successful business is action. That is, every organization is doing something in the form of value in exchange for money. Value, in this case, could be creating a product or rendering a service. However, business success is not about what the company offers but about maximizing the processes & operations involved in the delivery.
I work in the technology sphere in an organization that operates in the manufacturing industry. Cummins is one of the global leaders in the manufacturing industry, specifically in the heavy-duty engine business.
Several processes go into the creation of an engine. I will focus on the engine blocks and assembly for the emphasis of this discussion. I classify these approaches as batch processing and assembly line (2). The build process starts with boring the cylinder holes in an engine block depending on the specifications of the shop order, be it 4 or 6 cylinders. This step falls under bulk processing as the same boring goes through all blocks on the line. Putting the pieces together to compose the whole engine is an assembly line process (2). The assembly line is sequenced to ensure all components fit in a particular order and are machine-paced (2).
Navistar and Detroit diesel are other significant players in the industry (3). I do not have much insight into their assembly line process composition. However, it’s been efficient enough to make them vital key players.
While the manufacturing lines at Cummins are efficient, the company is living up to its value of innovation. The company is investing in new lines with inbuilt flexibility for different engine configurations. This technology means incorporating patch and line processing in one (2). Focusing on this improvement will yield more output with more variants of the same products.
Regards
Wale.
