Hi there!
The assignment is on week 9-12, during these weeks 2 different literature pieces were read and they are:
1) The Duke and I by Julia Quinn (2000)
2) Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan (2013) (The first novel in the series)
We also were assigned to watch the movie/TV-show version of these two books:

1. “Shock and Delight” (Season 1, Episode 2) of ‘Bridgerton’ (2020)
2. Crazy Rich Asians directed by Jon M. Chu (2018)
Ive provided/attached PDF copies of both books to this email. This assignment gives you two general categories of essay types to pick from, you can either choose to do a close reading essay or a research essay. And from these two essay types there are 3 different options you can pick from (***these 3 options are listed in the assignment #3 interactions file***). Please select one of these options and *carefully review its details*, often you’ll see something highlighted, bolded, or in a different colour, showing that the professor is indicating the significance of completing or concluding those points in the essay.
Generally descriiption of options (full descriiption ins assignment #3 file):
Option 1 – Research essay:
– comparing TWO pairs to assess which main couple or which parent and child pair have better communication by the end of the novel. Your argument should suggest what the superior or better pair severed to show about good or effective communication. Note: since this question is a comparison, you should examine pairs from BOTH novels (I suggest picking a pair from either novel), but you can focus on more more than the other.
– For this option you MUST HAVE AT LEAST 2 SOURCES other than the books to support writing.
Option 2 – Close reading essay:
– Select and examine one theme in crazy rich asians FIRST NOVEL in the series and one or more of the songs used in the film adaptation. Examine how or why the son lyrics further support or critique something about this particular theme in the book.
– The focus of this comparison is the book and the song lyrics
– No outside resources should be included, OTHER THAN to offer context for the song Ex, you want to cite the lyrics.
-MUST USE LOTS OF CLOSE QUOTATION ANALYSIS AND INTEGRATED QUOTATIONS (in this type of essay)
– Note: love or money is not a clear theme —> must offer context (Ex, money leads to corruption or freedom, or love leads to growth or sacrifice or …)
Option 3 – Close reading essay:
– Select and examine one theme in The Duke and I By Julia Quinn in the series and one or more of the songs used in the Netflix adaptation of this book (Netflix TV show, Bridgerton).
– Note: What or money is not a clear theme —> must offer context (Ex, money leads to corruption or freedom, or love leads to growth or sacrifice or …)
*Important note*:Keep in mind sources for the research paper option are VERY important. The professor requires AT LEAST TWO OUTSIDE SOURCES SEPARATE FROM THE BOOK SOURCES. This is critical as a missing source is equivalent to a 5% deduction PER source that is missing. Personally I would like to have more than 2 outside sources, please aim for 4-5 (other than the 2 book sources)should you choose the research paper option*
Important note: If you choose the close reading essay please refer to the supplementary integrated quotations document. This option requires LOTS OF CLOSE READING ANALYSIS, and thus requires many INTEGRATED QUOTATIONS. Keep in mind that BOTH types of essays (research essay and close reading essay) require integrated quotations, although this is emphasized in the close reading essay option since the focus is on the text. Although, I expect that should you choose one of the close reading essay options, you use MANY integrated quotations as this serves as proof of your points, AND pleas include
The main assignment outline and instructions are provided in a pdf file that can be opened on drive. From the several options listed on the assignment #3 instructions sheet, feel free to choose whichever inspires you the most or the one you are most comfortable with!
I’ve also attached modules from the course that might help you gain insight about what types of skills and the context the professor expects us to incorporate in the writing.
I’ve also added some useful resources for thesis writing, MLA formatting and close reading essay tips provided by the professor (should you choose that option, I think it’ll be helpful!
*Important note*: This professor is very critical on including a *clear tentative thesis statement*. I’ve provided a supplementary document that show a list of examples of different types of thesis’s and which type she expects us to formulate for this essay; ive also added a file that shows a guide on how to create a tentative thesis that the instructor has provided us with.
Another important point is that this professor expects that we include many “integrated quotations”, I’ve provided another supplementary document with what that looks like and how she expects us to integrate quotations from the novels and integrate them within our sentences. Please include many integrated quotations, at least one for each point you attempt to make as these quotations act as evidence or proof and count towards the critical thinking, analysis and support of the theme or point you are making.
*The supplementary documents help!* AND please refer to the ‘Assignment 3-English Essay Instructions’ document for extensive details and instructions

Paper Proposal 2
Read the paper topic options for Paper 2. Choose one topic.
In a paragraph writing of 150+ words give me a bird’s eye view of your plan for this paper. You should include:
Your basic topic: for example: I want to investigate the use of the motif of the Vampyre in Frankenstein. I want to examine how the motif of the Vampyre links Victor Frankenstein and his creation.
A working thesis/position on the topic: for example: Since the revenant of Baudelaire’s poem is not of one specific gender, the revenant reveals the risk and danger in any intimate relations and relationship.
One specific moment from our readings that you plan to use in the paper. Give a full line/page citation for this moment: for example: “And silently glide toward you/With the shadows of the night” (Charles Baudelaire, “Le revenant”, Fleurs du mal, https://fleursdumal.org/poem/ 171 (Links to an external site.) : 3 – 4). Explain the significance of the moment you select, for example: Baudelaire uses the motif of the revenant, the soucouyant, which is a shapeshifter. The shapeshifter can work in various forms and does not need to be physically in the same place as the victim. The soucouyant can use dreams, visions, illusions.
2 to 3 sentences on why you have selected this topic for the paper.
Some of these details may change from this proposal to the final product, but if you decide to make a major change, you must contact me via email at least 48 hours before the due date/time to clear this change with me.
*Some major changes would be: 1) You change your topic 2) You switch to a completely different text or character
Failure to submit this proposal, or a major shift from this proposal in the paper will result in a 10 % deduction of the final paper grade.

The minimum requirement is one paragraph. You may write a response based on one of the prompt ideas that will be listed in this assignment in at least one paragraph. The central point of interpretation must be specific based on one of the prompts. Focus on analyzing and decoding symbolic representations in the work found through an analysis of the authorial tone and diction as you interpret the work. The critique must be a MS Word document, double-spaced, Times New Roman font size 12,
and 3-5 pages in length.
The critique must include the full APA citation for the article.
The critique must be in essay form. It must use the structure set forth in the above “Outline for Research Critiques,” and it should use the criteria as major headings in the paper. It should not be written in bullet points or questions and answers but in the paragraphs of an essay.
Spend the least time on criterion 1.
In preparing your critique, you will use the following outline—which is a composite of many frameworks we have encountered in the past. The outline is built around five broad criteria for evaluating research reports: structure, clarity, execution, logic, and significance. Each of those criteria is fleshed out with a series of specific questions that can guide your thinking as you work your way through the articles. For additional points for you to consider:
Criteria #2 and #3 are the really difficult ones and are worthy of special attention in this course.
All five criteria matter, and a good critique will address them all.
The specific questions take on differing degrees of importance for different articles, and it is
never possible—or desirable—to answer each and every question in a written critique. One
of the more challenging parts of preparing a written critique is deciding what needs to be
emphasized to convey a given article’s principal strengths and weaknesses.
The rubric is attached.
