Reading Reactions/Response: You are responsible for reading assigned chapters and articles before Tuesday’s class. See schedule for weekly assignments. Students will be expected to complete a “reading reflection/response” at the beginning of each week, due the Tuesday before class begins, Typed, double spaced, 1-2 pages.) Less than a page will result in less points. Please submit all assignments on our canvas site. The “reading response” assignment is a technique for engaging in a dialogue with the instructor. The dialogue should be academic in nature but can also be personal as you related the information to your life. Do not tell me what the chapter presented; I know that! I have read the book. The “reading response” entry could respond to at least some of the following things: (please do not write 1), 2) 3) and answer that way. It is always OK to think outside of the box)
1) What are your responses and/or thoughts about the chapter reading for the week? What made sense? What did you agree with? What did you disagree with? Why?
2) What have you learned that might have lasting importance for you personally
and/or professionally? How did the reading relate to something in your life?
3) How and why is the topic important to the field of family violence, our country, or the world? Are there other things you have seen in life, or in the news/current events that directly relate to this? How?

Signs of compassion fatigue can also show up through mood swings, anxiety, depression, trouble being productive, insomnia, exhaustion or even changes in one’s appetite.

#1…..People who work in a professional setting and have to deal with people’s trauma day in and day out could start feeling extreme tiredness and desperation. The signs that can indicate that you or someone you know or work with might be developing compassion fatigue is the inability to work or complete daily activities. Signs of compassion fatigue can also show up through mood swings, anxiety, depression, trouble being productive, insomnia, exhaustion or even changes in one’s appetite. (Signs and Symptoms of Compassion Fatigue, 2022) Often times professionals have heavy workloads with excessive demands and long work hours which causes them to stress out triggering compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue can occur when being physically or verbally threatened by a client while providing care for them. Visiting an accident scene, observing graphic evidence, or dealing with evidence or reports of trauma is a major cause of compassion fatigue. It can also happen when an individual provides care to someone who deals with depression, death, grief, or mourning. Additionally, suicide or threats of suicide by someone under your care can also be stressful and cause an individual to have compassion fatigue. (Compassion Fatigue, Symptoms to look for, 2005) Overall, you should talk out your stress and process your thoughts with a coworker, therapist, clergy, friend, family member or manager. It is important to build a positive support system and embrace self-care. #2…..Before doing any research on compassion fatigue, I have a little personal experience with this. My husband was shot the beginning of 2020 and became paralyzed neck down. In that area we did not have many resources and support for spinal cord injuries so we had to learn and grow on our own. I became his full-time caregiver and have been since then. I experienced many symptoms of compassion fatigue like anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and lost sometimes with who I was and what I was doing. I would be so tired, and drained and get headaches all the time. I still have some of these symptoms but we have adapted and learned how to use self-care and coping skills. I will go for walks every day and sometimes he will go for a roll with me. This sounds crazy but since I work from home I like to leave every morning and get coffee. It was something I did before his injury on the way to work. It is so important to notice signs of compassion fatigue and know how to address them.

Choose three readings we have covered so far.

Choose three readings we have covered so far. ( readings are attached and below) ( if you are going to speak in 1st person remember I’m a she)
(1) Pick one quote from each of the three readings (ensure the quotes are relatively short—no more than three lines).
(2) Explain each quote. In other words, what does what the authors wrote mean to you?
(3) Respond to each quote with your own analysis and ideas. For most of our work so far, I’ve asked you to make your own inferences. I want you to continue that thinking in this midterm—help me consider these readings and these quotes in a different way. I want you to challenge yourselves, challenge the authors’ points of view, and challenge me.
(4) Ensure that your response is two pages, 12 pt. Times New Roman font and 1.5 spaced. I will take off points if you don’t follow these directions.

Creating a reading “map” is a process for ensuring active reading and retention of information from assigned materials

Creating a reading “map” is a process for ensuring active reading and retention of information from assigned materials. It requires explicitly recognizing how a piece of writing is organized and being able to communicate its central claims in your own words. It represents the reading process in which you are participating and also allows you to quickly review the meanings of a particular essay in order to be able to more meaningfully and precisely contribute to class discussions. They also serve as a model for testing your comprehension of diverse texts, because you have to be able to reflect what you have learned.
The sections for a Reading Map include:
Thesis/Central Point of the writing;
Development of the analysis (in which you summarize the major points in the order they are laid out in the article); and
Major topics and concepts identified by location in the writing (page number or section).
