“Ethical Dilemmas in Early Childhood Education: Applying Utilitarianism or Deontology to Controversial Parental Requests” Applying Ethical Theories to a Real-Life Case Study: A Reflection on Ethical Dilemmas

TOPIC: #5 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Early Childhood Education encompasses a broad time span ranging from infancy to first or second grade.  The age ranges of children in early childhood education makes for very different ethical issues.  Many of these issues arise because of requests or concerns on the part of parents such as parents requesting their infant not have an afternoon nap to parents requesting their child stay indoors due to allergies or fear the child may be hurt.  When choosing this topic, make sure to focus on a narrow and specific issue such as indicated in these two examples.

______________________________________________________________
For this assignment you will create a new case study based on a new set of topics and resources. You will also apply an ethical theory to the case study in ways that show how the core principles of the theory are relevant to the case study, and how someone using those principles would answer the ethical question. The Week 3 written assignment should be an essay and include the following sections with headings in bold font:
Part 1: Introduction, Case Study, Ethical Question
In this section, present an introduction to the general topic, explain the case study, identify the central moral controversy at stake, and articulate an ethical question that describes the central moral controversy at stake. This section must include one quote from one of the resources provided with the case study. To complete this section,
Choose a case study from the selection provided by your instructor in the Week 3 announcement titled “Week 3 Case Studies.”
Present a brief introduction to the case study.
Discuss background information.
Identify the central moral controversy at stake in the case study.
Articulate an ethical question based on the central moral controversy.
This section should be around 300 words.
Part 2: Reading Philosophy Reflection
In this section, choose one of the philosophical texts associated with your chosen ethical theory listed in the Philosophical Texts Download Philosophical Textsdocument. Copy and paste the text into this section of the paper. After applying the reading philosophy steps from the Week 1 discussion,
Explain the key ideas in the text.
Discuss how your understanding of the text evolved after multiple reads.
This section should be around 150 words (excluding the philosophical text).
Part 3: Explanation of Utilitarianism or Deontology
In this section, describe the ethical theory of utilitarianism or deontology and explain its core principles. This section must include one quote from the provided resources on the ethical theory. To complete this section,
Discuss the historical background of the ethical theory and the philosopher(s) associated with it.
Explain the core moral principle of the theory, or if there is more than one, the principle that you will focus on in applying that theory to your question.
Demonstrate how the theory and its core moral principle(s) apply to an ethical question that is different than the topic of your case study. For example, what would deontologists say about the morality of lying, and what principle would support their statement; what would utilitarians say about the morality of using animals in medical research, and what principle would support their statement?
This section should be around 350 words.
Part 4: Application of Ethical Theory
In this section, apply the core principle(s) you articulated above to the central moral controversy in the case study.
Explain how the core principle(s) of the ethical theory apply to the case study. This might include considering which facts or features of the case study lend themselves to analysis by the ethical theory.
Apply the core principles of the theory to the central moral controversy in the case study by showing how someone using the theory would answer the ethical question addressed by your case study.
This section should be around 350 words.

“Exploring the Global Impact of a Moral Issue on Cultural Communities: An Analysis Using Moral Theories”

a. Identify a moral issue à It will help you immensely if you use your group presentation topic as the moral issue of your ePortfolio paper. This way you only need to do one research project.  You can, however, choose a separate topic.  NOT EVERYTHING THAT IS CONTROVERSIAL IS A MORAL ISSUE—you must have your topic approved by me before you begin.
b. Determine how this issue affects multiple cultural communities à I am willing to entertain that you may decide to identify these communities along whatever demarcations work best for your existing knowledge, areas of interest, and ease of analysis.
c. Identify the ways this moral issue has had a global impact à Again, I am willing to let you decide what constitutes a global “impact,” however, you must determine these within the scope of the affects on the communities identified in (b) above. You must identify at least two ways this issue impacts these communities.  You ought to consider an impact a way in which the moral issue creates additional complications for those communities.
d. Research à Research is more than just doing google searches although starting with a few google searches will help Being by identifying several “key terms” and use them to whittle down your research scope.  Scroll through news articles that contain your search terms, watch news clips that discuss your issue, find sources that provide analysis from the perspective of the communities you are analyzing.  You must use a minimum of five (5) sources for your essay and you must quote from those sources a minimum of two (2) times each in your essay – that means there should be at leastten (10) citations in your written work.  Of your five (5) required sources at least three (3) must be from reputable print sources and all web sources must be equally reputable.  Avoid blogs, tweets, tiktoks, personal web pages (unless it is a reliable source).  If you are unsure about the quality of a source ask me, another professor, or a librarian for assistance.  You will likely need to do research to clearly identify how you want to complete (b) and (c) above.
e. Outline BEFORE you write à Your essay should include sections that clearly focus on and address the requirements of the essay as given. It is much easier to write an essay if you have a “roadmap” to follow.  So, a basic outline should look something like this:
1) Introduction – briefly identify your issue, why it is a moral issue, how you are going to evaluate it – identify the two moral theories you are going to use, explain why it matters to current socio-political discourse. (150 – 200 words)
2) Main Idea – explain the moral issue in depth, provide explanations of *both sides* of the issue – apply analysis from your two theories here.  What communities are affected?  How does this issue have a global reach? (550 – 800 words)
3) Sub-Main Idea – How does this issue “impact” the global community?  Remember to extend your analysis here of the main issue to demonstrate how it compounds problems in other areas in moral ways. (150 – 300 words)
4) Sub-Main Idea – What is a likely response to the issue?  Why is that response a good moral critique of or position to take on the issue.  You need to defend your position here so be sure to provide solid evidence in support of your claims.  It is important that you are developing “your claims” and not merely parroting what other people are saying (300 – 500 words)
5) Conclusion – Sum up your position succinctly.  However, you should also indicate problems with your proposed solution, areas where additional research may be needed, what might affect your judgement of the issue, etc.  DO NOT SIMPLY RESTATE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE ALREADY SAID.
f. Write à Your essay should be type-written, 12 pt Times New Roman font, double spaced, appropriately formatted (standard settings in Word), and your citations should follow the guidelines of the Chicago Manual of Style (available free online)

Part I – Explain the dilemma in detail.
Part II -Explain the three theories and use the three sources from the book, summarize those sources clearly and in detail.

“Navigating Ethical Dilemmas in End-of-Life Care: A Case Analysis and Recommendations”

Instructions from teacher:
1. Read through news, articles, podcasts and other sources to find an example of a current ethical dilemma in your field. This should be a specific instance, and not a general topic. For example, you could focus on He Jiankui Defends ′World′s First Gene-Edited Babies. but not just the idea of genetically engineering babies. It is expected that you review multiple articles from different sources in your assessment to ensure that you are gaining multiple perspectives on the situation. A minimum of 3 sources are to be cited. 2. Conduct a comprehensive case analysis. This is an opportunity to pull together all the knowledge that you have gained throughout the course. Your case analysis should include:
Case desсrіption & background:
a thorough and concise discussion on the key facts
describe any missing information
identify stakeholders (active and passive) and any conflicting interests
Ethical analysis:
identify ALL ethical dilemmas and the values being challenged
violations to ethical codes of conduct/professional codes
identify key decision makers
share the outcomes from the decisions made including any legal action, organizational changes, industry changes (changes to business conduct/operations, personnel changes, etc.), etc.
Alternates:
compile a comprehensive list of alternate actions by the various parties
identify your recommendations for the best course of action and explain your thought process
highlight ethical theories reflected in your decision making
3. Create a presentation to share your case analysis including a slide deck with a minimum of 10 slides (not including references) and video 10 – 15 minute presentation recording. (I will be doing this part)
Instructions from student:
If you could please create the presentation and a sсrіpt for me so that I may present it that would be great. My topic is Ethical Issues Surrounding End-of-Life Care.

Title: The Ethical Theory of Altruism: Its Impact on My Life and Career

-This paper must cite at least three different non-textbook sources
-You are required to submit a photocopy of any internet sources that you use
in your paper.
-All papers must be MLA format – 1-inch margins, double-spaced, typed,
complete heading. Papers not in the proper format will be documented a letter
grade. Papers without in-text citations and works cited pages will result in a
zero
Define the ethical Altruism theory, give some background on the theory, and explain
how this particular theory applies to your life today, including your current
job and your potential future career (See the student examples I provided
for help). Remember we covered the ethical theories the first part of the
course. They are the isms, such as ethical egoism, cultural relativism,
utilitarianism, altruism, hedonism, etc. Do not use the topics in the second
part of the book. This is the applied ethics section of the course. For
example, I do not want a paper on abortion, the death penalty, etc. These
are not ethical theories.
Each paper must have a Works Cited. Complete bibliographical details of each
work must be given. The title, author, publisher (or journal title), date, place of publication (or
Internet address), and page number(s) should be given. Use as many sources as you want from
the Internet but see cautionary note below. Whenever you quote a source, paraphrase it, referto it, or use it to support or document a claim, you must cite that source.
Internet Sources
The internet is a great research tool; feel free to use it in doing research for your paper.
However, Internet sources are not generally peer-reviewed or otherwise monitored for
reliability, accuracy, or integrity. Therefore, use considerable caution when citing material
from the Internet. Make sure that the source is worthwhile. Use of Internet encyclopedias is
discouraged. In addition, sources such as Wikipedia, while possibly useful to give you an
overview of a subject, are not appropriate scholarly sources for an academic paper. The
instructor reserves the right to determine whether a quoted source is appropriate or not. Check
with the instructor if you have any questions about the appropriateness of Internet materials.
If you use internet sources for your project, post the entire article on your webpage. I don’t
just want a URL linking to your article.
Citations and Notes
You must indicate from where you are making any quotations you use in your paper. It is also
important to cite the source of arguments and ideas when you take them from a textbook or
other author. The way to do this is use in-text citation. If you have in-text citations, you must
include a works cited page with your essay. See a handbook, i.e. The Seagull Handbook or the
library has handouts available on how to do a works cited page.
Internet Sources
If you use an Internet source, you must submit it with your research paper. Failure to submit the
entire Internet source (not just the URL) with your research paper will result in a failing grade
(F) for the research paper. You can post these sources on your webpage with your paper.
I have attached the introduction and conclusion to my paper so you can make it personal to me.

Title: “A Comprehensive Policy for Addressing the Immigrant Situation at the Southern Border” Policy: The United States government should adopt a comprehensive policy that balances the humanitarian needs of immigrants with the safety and security of the country. This policy should address

Your assignment is to come up with a policy of how to deal with the immigrant situation at our Southern border.
Who do we let in?
How many do we let in?
What do we do with the people when they first show up at the border- some argue we keep them in facilities until we know they’re not coming in for possibly bad reasons.  Some say we shouldn’t detain anyone because it’s inhumane.  We’ve seen pictures of kids in what looks like cages while they are being processed to make sure they’re with their parents and not being smuggled in for possibly bad reasons (sex trafficking).
This issue is a very difficult one and will require some thought.  Look for resources online but I want your answer to be your answer not just a copy/paste of something you found online.
After coming up with your answer, show how your answer fits into or disagrees with the three theories from the Chapter four Matrix.  Consequentialism, Deontology or Virtue Theory
