Statement of Purpose AssignmentDirections: Write a two – three page, double-spaced statement of purpose for one
of the schools you are researching. Your statement should be addressed to a
specific graduate school and program, it should not be generic. This assignment
gives you the opportunity to reflect on your past experiences, your future goals,
and how graduate school school plays a role in your academic and personal plans.
To complete this assignment, you must write a paper that includes the following
components:
1. Opening/Introduction/Hook
2. A discussion of your undergraduate experience
3. A discussion of your specific academic/professional interests and how
graduate study furthers those interests
4. Answers to any specific questions identified in the graduate school
application
5. Conclusion
Remember beyond merely conveying information your S.O.P has tasks. Your
statement must:
1. Engage the admissions committee within the first few paragraphs
2. Convey your interest in the program in a way that makes “personal” sense
3. Explain how your admission into the program allows the institution to make
a contribution to either (or both) your community or society (the social
engineering factor)
4. Make them want to meet and/or work with you
5. Creates a good feeling for the reader
